Healthy Habits to Transform Your Year

As we move into 2025, many of us are looking for ways to prioritize our health and well-being. At Doc Watson's Café, we’re passionate about helping our community live healthier lives—starting with what’s on your plate. To inspire your journey, we’ve curated a list of healthy habits that are easy to incorporate into your daily routine, along with some healthy dinner ideas to kickstart your commitment to healthy eating.

A healthy dinner idea to help form healthy habits in 2025. Quinoa and hummus on a salad.

1. Prioritize Balanced Meals for your healthy habits

A balanced plate fuels your body and mind. Aim to include lean protein, healthy fats, and plenty of vegetables in every meal.

Healthy Dinner Idea: Try a grilled chicken quinoa bowl loaded with fresh greens, roasted veggies, and a drizzle of lemon-tahini dressing.

2. Meal Prep for Success for healthy eating

Planning your meals ahead of time ensures you make nutritious choices even on busy days. Set aside an hour each week to prepare ingredients or cook a few meals in advance. Dinner especially is a great meal to prepare for. We recommend cooking a large batch of protein on Sundays to ensure you have protein for at least 3 different meals. This will make the prep work easier when you are ready to cook dinner!

Healthy Dinner Idea: Batch-cook a hearty vegetable soup with lentils and freeze portions for easy, nutrient-packed dinners.

3. Eat Whole, Real Foods

Opt for whole, minimally processed foods whenever possible. Fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and high-quality proteins should take center stage in your diet.

At Doc Watson’s Café, we follow this principle by using real fruit in our smoothies and pesticide-free greens in our salads. Always check the labels when you're grocery shopping! You'll be surprised by how many items contain processed versions of foods.

4. Add More Greens to Your Plate

Leafy greens like kale, spinach, and arugula are nutrient powerhouses. Incorporate them into every meal—whether it's blending them into smoothies, tossing them into salads, or sautéing them as a side.

Healthy Dinner Idea: A warm kale and sweet potato salad topped with grilled salmon and a honey-mustard vinaigrette. Sounds so good we might need to add this one to the menu.

5. Cook at Home More Often; Incorporating Healthy Dinner Ideas

Preparing meals at home allows you to control the ingredients and portion sizes. Experiment with spices and herbs to keep things flavorful without relying on processed sauces or additives.

Need inspiration? Our café menu is full of ideas for simple yet delicious meals you can recreate at home. We love simple options like salads using seasonal fruits and vegtables! Get inspired by the season you're in!

6. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Water is essential for every function in your body, from digestion to mental clarity. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses a day, and more if you’re active.

Pro Tip: Infuse your water with fresh fruits like lemon, cucumber, or berries for a flavorful boost. You can also try adding electrolytes to your water to ensure your body is replenishing the minerals it needs. Aim for clean electrolytes like Re-Lyte, or try sprinkling in your own real salt to your water for an extra boost. Avoid using table salt.

7. Make Dinner a Mindful Experience

Eating isn’t just about nutrition—it’s also an opportunity to slow down and savor. Turn off the TV, put your phone away, and truly enjoy your meal.

Studies show it typically takes your body 30 minutes to realize that it is full and no longer hungry. Slowing down while eating your food can also help you avoid over eating.

Healthy Dinner Idea: Host a family-style dinner with a build-your-own veggie and protein platter for a fun, interactive meal.

8. Swap Unhealthy Fats for Healthy Ones

Not all fats are created equal. Replace processed oils and trans fats with healthy fats like olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, and nuts.

At Doc Watson’s Café, we only use 100% avocado oil, coconut oil, and extra virgin olive oil in our dishes to ensure every bite is as wholesome as it is tasty. You'll never find toxic oils in any of menu items.

9. Practice Portion Control

Sometimes it’s not about what you eat but how much. Pay attention to portion sizes, especially when eating calorie-dense foods like nuts, seeds, and grains. Try to eat more of "whole foods" rather than processed ones.

10. Experiment with Plant-Based or Meat-Based Meals

Not everyone responds to the same diet the same way, we always recommend trying out varieties of eating habits to help you judge how to feel your best. Whether it be plant-based, or meat-based, ensure you are getting a well rounded group of nutrients to satisfy your body's needs. Aim to maintain at least 15-30 grams of protein at every meal to build muscle and help aid fat loss.

Healthy Dinner Idea: Try a hearty black bean and vegetable stir-fry served over brown rice or cauliflower rice for a satisfying and nutritious dinner. Try out cooked lamb or pork to experiment with new proteins!
